There are very few books featuring Afro-Latino children and stories in Spanish. So I’m pleased to share these recommendations in español from Puerto Rican authors.

Thiago y la aventura en los túneles de San Germán
Esta novela juvenil apuesta a rescatar lectores apasionados por las aventuras y las narraciones reflexivas. Combina la historia con elementos tecnológicos como las tabletas, los smartphones, las aplicaciones móviles y los juegos interactivos para brindar mayores oportunidades de atención y provocar el intelecto de las mentes más jóvenes.
Capitán Cataño
Ashanti y Viti, madre e hijo, viven en el costero pueblo de Cataño. Viti es un muchacho muy astuto que disfruta de la pintura y que despliega amplia inteligencia visual y cinestésica. Agradables aventuras le esperan a él y a sus amigas, Vanesa y Susi, en el terminal de las lanchas de Cataño y durante su trayecto por las calles amuralladas del Viejo San Juan.
El cuento de Papapedia
El cuento de Papapedia narra la historia de un padre excepcional que comparte momentos especiales con su hija Wandelín y su hijo Abraham a través del intercambio de conocimiento. Mientras se dedica a la crianza de su pequeña pero afectiva familia, discute con ellos detalles de la historia de su país, instancias culturales y los símbolos patrios de la Isla. Esta interacción permitirá entre ellos un desenlace emotivo e inolvidable.
Pelo bueno
La abuela Petronila demuestra todo el amor que siente por su nieta, al contarle historias familiares. También brinda lecciones sobre la defensa del cabello natural. Este es un cuento que resalta las raíces de la afropuertorriqueñidad y que infunde orgullo para que crezca la autoestima en nuestros nietos y nietas, hijos e hijas.
Mejorar la raza
Sin darnos cuenta, muy poco a poco, los prejuicios y el discrimen se van insertando en nuestras vidas. Desde muy jóvenes escuchamos palabras y oraciones que sin querer van estableciendo modos discriminatorios de convivencia. Inconscientemente, el mundo va tomando un matiz de injusticia, y quizás cuando logramos darnos cuenta, ya es muy tarde. La frase “mejorar la raza” ha traido burla y sufrimiento a las vidas de muchos, y desde este cuento infantil una abuela y su nieta reflexionan en ello. Te invito a que te sumerjas en la historia y te apropies del cambio social que con paso firme la justicia va forjando en estos nuevos tiempos.

Negro, negrito

¿Cómo nos imaginamos que era de niño el Padre de la Patria Puertorriqueña? El cuento también incluye información histórica sobre la Revolución Haitiana.
Los juguetes de Caleb
Los juguetes de Caleb, un cuento cortísimo en función de detener el acoso escolar y reforzar la perspectiva de género, logra mucho más: establece el hermosísimo y tan olvidado valor del cooperativismo, algo que necesitamos con gran urgencia en nuestra sociedad si queremos salvarla.

Beautifully illustrated bilingual book, presenting a mother’s description of her young child, with references of their cultural identity and family values. Excellent read to expose children to the Spanish language and Afro-Caribbean culture. Includes discussion questions and coloring pages.

Bad Hair Does Not Exist/Pelo Malo No Existe
“Bad Hair Does Not Exist!/“Pelo Malo No Existe!” – is a book with an anti-bullying message that reinforces respect for individualism. Hispanic and Black children are exposed to the divisive and bullying term, “bad hair,” within their own communities. The term “bad hair” or “pelo malo” is used to describe hair that is usually of curlier texture or of a thick and coarse density. This is irresponsible and often contributes to a child’s low self -esteem, dividing both communities and families. The book’s purpose is to empower all children by giving them alternate terms to describe their hair, and teaching them the importance of respecting one another’s differences.
